Myofascial Release

Dr. Heather has trained and been certified in Active Release Techniques (ART), a manual myofascial release therapy performed to specific soft tissue structures of the body. The purpose of this therapy is to relieve the body of scar tissue and adhesions that form as a result of the tissue being exposed to damaging forces. Such forces include sudden or acute injury, chronic or cumulative injury, or pressure injury such as poor posture.

Muscles are made of tiny filaments, or strands, bundled together. These filaments tear when a muscle is injured, causing physical and chemical change in the tissue. Over time, the damaged tissue is replaced by lesser quality tissue called adhesions, or scar tissue. These adhesions are fibrous and disorganized, and can occur within or between the muscles.

These injuries cause restrictions in movement, blood flow, lymph flow, and nerve conduction. These adhesions can develop within the muscles themselves, between the fascia (the tissue covering a muscle), muscles and bones, muscles and nerves, tendons and joints, and many other combinations involving soft tissues of the musculoskeletal system. These adhesions can choke off the normal blood, lymph, and nerve supply, which is a common cause of trigger points.

Myofascial release goes hand-in-hand with chiropractic by helping to relieve muscle tension and damaged tissue related to and caused by intersegmental joint dysfunction.

Many conditions can be helped using these methods, such as:

  • Carpal Tunnel

  • Rotator Cuff injuries

  • TMJ

  • Golfer's & Tennis Elbow

  • Infrapatellar Tendonitis (Jumper's Knee)

  • Plantar Fasciitis

  • Piriformis Syndrome

  • Shin Splints

  • ITB pain

  • Ulnar Nerve Entrapment

  • DeQuervain's Syndrome

  • Osgood-Schlatter

Just to name a few!!
